01/19/10 Open House at HRCA
Haw River Christian Academy looks ahead to its third year while Chatham County takes notice. In a year’s time, the school’s student enrollment has doubled and the benefits of its teaching are being recognized by many local families. The public is invited to see firsthand how this new school is becoming a unique, educational alternative for the community. Its upcoming Open House is scheduled for Thursday, February 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. at the school’s current facility, Rock Springs Baptist Church. This event serves as an excellent venue for interested families to tour the school facility, view student work, talk with faculty, and meet parents of enrolled students.
Haw River Christian Academy (HRCA) eagerly begins its third academic school year in the Fall of 2010. It has come a long way in a few short years as Chatham County’s premier classical Christian school. HRCA seeks to educate students with excellent classical academics that are taught as an integrated whole, with the Scriptures at the center serving as the hub of all knowledge. As a result, students learn to interrelate and examine knowledge, allowing them to view their studies as a unified effort. Its classical teaching methodology blended with a biblical worldview, uniform code, and emphasis on Christian values and traditional manners is making it an attractive educational option.
HRCA currently offers kindergarten (half-day) and grades 1-3. It will add fourth grade for the 2010-2011 school year, with plans to continue adding one grade per year until serving grades K-12. In addition to its regular classes, HRCA offers art, music and Latin classes for homeschoolers on a weekly basis throughout the school year.
The admissions process, for the 2010-11 school year, opens to the general public on February 1. New applicants submitting applications by March 15 will receive half off the application fee. There is limited seating in all grades, so it is best to get your application in early.
Interested families are also encouraged to schedule a tour by contacting the School Office at 533-4139 or to visit the school’s website, www.HawRiverChristian.org, as an additional resource.

03/27/09 Academy Opens Doors to Homeschoolers
Haw River Christian Academy (HRCA) is not only opening up another grade this Fall, serving grades K-3, but also expanding its student body to include homeschooling families. The school will be offering Music and Latin classes for interested families. Registration is now open for the 2009-10 school year, which begins in September.
As part of the classical Christian curriculum, Latin is introduced to the Academy’s students beginning in the 3rd grade. Homeschooling families who are seeking outside assistance in this subject may consider enrolling their child(ren), grades 2-5 (ages 7-10 by August 31, 2009) in the school’s program. Pastor Jerry Ward, Pittsboro Church of the Nazarene, will be teaching the class. He graduated in 2001 with a religion degree from Trevecca Nazarene University. He continued his education at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, eventually returning to the South to attend Duke Divinity School.
Music classes, for grades 2-5 (ages 7-10 by August 31, 2009), will also be available to homeschoolers. The class is taught by a local parent and member of the school, Amanda Sparks, who holds a degree in music performance (voice) and an endorsement for teaching music. She is classically trained in piano, voice, and several instruments.
Students are taught proper singing technique, how to sing in harmony, and performance skills while learning hymns and quality songs. They also study beginning music theory including rhythm pattern repetition, reading and writing simple music notation, and beginning music vocabulary. Students are introduced to the instruments of the orchestra and begin to identify them while listening to selected classical music literature. There is also an emphasis on music history and music genre. During the Spring semester, the students will learn to play the recorder.
Tuition for the Latin class, which meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at HRCA from 9:00-9:45 A.M. (with review materials provided for Monday and Friday) is $50.00/month per child. The Music class, scheduled for Wednesday mornings from 9:45-10:45 A.M., is $40.00/month per child. Applications, requiring a $50.00 registration fee for either class, are now available. Students may register for both classes, specially priced at $75.00/month per child, with a $75.00 registration fee. Seating is limited.

HRCA Raffles A Motorbike at First Sunday
Representatives of Haw River Christian Academy conducted the official drawing
for the winner of a 2008 Honda youngsters motorcycle, raffled at the end of First
Sunday on December 7. The bike was one of two, each valued at $1700.00,
donated to the school this Fall by a Chatham County family.
Drew Whitehead, a 5-year old kindergarten student at the school, was the lucky
winner. All ticket sale proceeds will go directly to the school, which as a private
school depends solely on tuition and money raised through donations and
fundraising activities.
The school’s fundraising committee decided to begin raffling one of the bikes in
early November, with the drawing date set on the same day as Pittsboro’s
Christmas parade and First Sunday. The bike drew a lot of attention as it was
displayed during the street parade on the school’s decorated trailer surrounded
by several students. No plans have been made for the second donated bike yet.

HRCA and Chatham YMCA Partner in PE Classes
After its doors opened in early September, Haw River Christian Academy and the
Chatham YMCA teamed up to offer weekly physical education classes to its
students. The YMCA’s fitness program successfully complements HRCA’s
classical Christian curriculum, which caters to students’ growing minds and
bodies through rigorous academics, exposure to the arts, spiritual development,
and physical wellness.

The YMCA proposed the idea to the school this Summer. When asked what
inspired it, Jennifer Sipe, Youth Program Director, said, “The Chatham YMCA is
interested in helping children be healthy and what better way than offering PE
classes to the Academy.” The school immediately welcomed their proposal.
Amanda Sparks, Grammar School Principal, expressed, “We were enthusiastic
and appreciative to learn of the YMCA's interest in becoming a part of our school
through this service. Being a new school, our resources are definitely limited,
and to have a local Christian organization get involved is truly an answered
prayer.”

In regards to the logistics of the program, Sipe explained, “The class will be
learning all the basics of physical fitness along with some age appropriate motor
skills. We will be playing freeze dance, bombardment pins, speedball, scooter
soccer, to name just a few. We also hope to teach them that playing games,
sports, and being active is fun!”

In addition to physical fitness, the YMCA’s involvement complements the
philosophy of HRCA’s role in ministering to Christian families. “In every Y
program we teach the core values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility.
In addition to our core values we will be teaching the importance of eating
healthy and making exercise a part of their daily lives,” commented Sipe. These
life lessons tie into HRCA’s biblical worldview teaching, which is integrated into
all subjects. Sparks explained, “God created our bodies so that we may do His
work. All of our efforts in life are to be directed towards His glory, even exercise.
In addition, some of our students will naturally be gifted in athletics; these gifts
need to be nurtured as God can use us in so many different arenas here on
earth.”

As a new school with a limited budget and minimal resources, HRCA embraces
the community’s efforts, such as the Chatham YMCA, to support it. Additionally,
Rock Spring Baptist Church’s lease of their education wing and the school’s
teachers, staff, and volunteers, who wholeheartedly believe in its vision and
goals, all contribute to it being a successful education option in Chatham County.
HRCA currently offers kindergarten (half-day) through grade 2, with plans to add
one grade per year until serving K-12. Weekly tours are available and may be
scheduled with the school office, 919-533-4139. More information is also
available on the school’s web site, www.hawriverchristian.org.

8/29/08 Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
August 29, 2008

HRCA Cuts the Ribbon for Classes to Begin
The Board members of Haw River Christian Academy cut the ribbon for the school’s grand opening ceremony held on Tuesday, August 26. Staff members, parents, students, and local supporters participated in the celebration. Chatham County’s new private Christian school is located at Rock Spring Baptist Church, along Highway 15-501 North between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill. Classes begin September 2 for Kindergarten (half-day) to Grade 2.
Space is available for families seeking to educate their children with a non-denominational classical Christian curriculum, which integrates rigorous academics with a biblical worldview. In addition to the basic subjects, the curriculum blends in Latin, classic literature, great works of art, classical music, and physical education. Beyond subject matter, classical education develops skills that are essential in higher education and throughout life - independent
scholarship, critical thinking, logical analysis, and a love for learning. There is an emphasis on discipline, routines, personal appearance (e.g. school uniforms), traditional manners, and respect for authority.
HRCA is a member of the Association of Classical Christian Schools. There are approximately 200 of these schools across America. Cary Christian School, located in Wake County, and Rockbridge Academy in Maryland provided assistance and experience that helped HRCA open its doors for the 2008-09 school year. The school plans to add one or two grades per year until serving grades K-12. The tuition breakdown is: Kindergarten for $360/month and Grades 1-2 for $460/month. Tuition is based on 10 months and includes 2 school uniforms.
The vision for this school began with a group of local parents in February 2007who sought an alternative education for their children. With the commitment, dedication, and sacrifices of this group, the school has taken shape and accomplished many tasks since its inception such as filing for 501(c)3 non-profit status, forming a Board, writing documentation, seeking an initial location, hiring staff and enrolling students, facility preparations, and lots more.
Tours are available and may be scheduled with the school office, 919-533-4139.
