02/27/11 Town Board Approves Special Use Permit!

After much deliberation and increasing community debate, the Town Board of Pittsboro voted 4-0 on February 27, 2012 to approve (with stipulations) the Special Use Permit application for HRCA's relocation to 50 West Salisbury Street in downtown Pittsboro. The vote was based on the evidence as presented by Larry Robinson, headmaster, and school supporters through the quasi-judicial process. Town Hall had standing room only, continuing into the outside hallway, filled with Board members, staff, parents, students, town merchants, and other supporters. Additionally, a group of supporters coordinated a prayer vigil just before the meeting. This newsworthy event also got the attention of NBC-17 and ABC-11 tv crews who were on-site for the vigil and town vote. HRCA wishes to thank all of our supporters who attended the town meetings, wrote letters and emails, made phone calls, signed a petition, prayed, and patiently awaited an official answer from the Town of Pittsboro since August 2011. After the board's unanimous vote, Mr. Robinson's closing words were, "Our goal has always been and will be to be a good neighbor working hand in hand with those around us to see that everyone benefits from our being located on Salisbury Street." He also stated how we were simply seeking confirmation of whether this is where God is leading the school.

01/26/12 HRCA's 5th Annual Open House on Feb. 2

The 2012-13 admissions season is underway at Haw River Christian Academy (HRCA) for re-enrollees, siblings, and corporation members until January 31. On February 2, HRCA will host its annual Open House event, 5:30-7:30 P.M., to provide prospective families with the opportunity to learn more about this non-denominational, private school in Chatham County. Applications from the general public can be submitted beginning on February 1.

HRCA has experienced extensive growth since it opened in August 2008, doubling in size each of the first 3 years and nearly at capacity in each grade in the current school year. Approximately 12% of its growth stems from families relocating to Chatham County from out-of-state or other areas of North Carolina. The school leased the education wing of Rock Spring Baptist Church, just north of Pittsboro on 15-501, as a starting point for founding and growing the school. Given the pace of growth, HRCA’s Long Range Planning team began researching potential locations one year ago, narrowing down its interest to a 12,000 square foot vacant building on 50 West Salisbury Street in downtown Pittsboro. A Special Use permit was submitted to the Town of Pittsboro on August 2, 2011. Since that time, the school has participated in five town meetings and spent approximately $15,000 in architectural fees, civil engineer fees, and a professional traffic study in order to meet all of the criteria required by the town’s decision makers. Building inspectors, the fire marshall, and other experts have also been asked for their input on the project. On February 6, the school’s application will revisit the Planning Board and then the following week, February 13, a public hearing has been opened with the Town Commissioners preparing for a final vote.

12/01/10 HRCA Supports Salvation Army

Haw River Christian Academy (HRCA) presented a monetary donation to the Pittsboro Salvation Army on Tuesday, November 30. Students raised money for their 2nd annual school walkathon, in which a portion of the proceeds were dedicated to this local charity. Increased enrollment in the 2010-11 school year, doubling the student body, enabled HRCA to raise twice the amount for this local organization since 2009.

HRCA is grateful to many members and businesses in Chatham County for their support through donations and event participation. In its third year of operation, teaching and successfully operating on a limited budget, HRCA continues to strive to illustrate the importance of giving back to the community in this season of thankfulness and cheerful giving.

The Salvation Army is an international non-profit organization. Locally, with a full-time staff and group of volunteers, this organization is able to serve Chatham County from two locations based in Pittsboro and Siler City. They address many needs throughout the year, with their greatest service being provided through their year-end “Christmas Cheer” program. This year’s program has received a very high number of applications from families seeking assistance this Christmas. Of the approximately 800 applications received thus far, an estimated 2,000 children are facing a lack of basic needs here in Chatham County. Simple contributions like canned goods and clothing can be delivered to the Pittsboro office, located downtown at 200 Sanford Road, Suite 1. Checks (mailed to P.O. Box 752, Pittsboro, NC 27312) can also be donated for the Salvation Army to purchase the items of greatest need. All donations are eligible for tax-deductible receipts.

It has come a long way in a few short years as Chatham County’s premier classical Christian school. HRCA seeks to educate students with excellent classical academics that are taught as an integrated whole, with the Scriptures at the center serving as the hub of all knowledge. As a result, students learn to interrelate and examine knowledge, allowing them to view their studies as a unified effort. Its classical teaching methodology blended with a biblical worldview, uniform code, and emphasis on Christian values and traditional manners is making it an attractive educational option.

We hope you have all had a restful and joyous Christmas! To ring in the New Year a little early, Haw River Christian Academy is hosting a Family Fun Fundraiser day, this Wednesday, December 30th.

The first event we are hosting is another fun day at Monkey Joe's of Cary from 2 pm -5 pm. Come in anytime during that time frame and we'll earn a portion of the proceeds. The last time we did this in August, the kids had a great time and burned off some pent up energy!

After your kids are done bouncing, you can head over to the Chili's in Apex for Haw River night. With the attached flyer, our school will receive 10% of the sales.

If you have any questions about either of these events, please feel free to contact us. We hope to see you there!

10/30/09 Academy’s Walkathon Benefits Local Charity

The students of Haw River Christian Academy participated in their first annual school walkathon in late October, with an approximate one-mile route through the heart of Fearrington Village. Then on November 20, during an ice cream celebration for reaching their walkathon goal, they presented a portion of the school’s fundraiser to the Pittsboro Salvation Army.

Haw River Christian Academy (HRCA) is a classical Christian school located in Pittsboro. This non-profit, church independent school operates solely on tuition and fundraising. Since its recent inception, the school is grateful to many members and businesses of the community for their support through donations. Now in its second year of teaching and successfully operating on a limited budget, HRCA wants to illustrate the importance of giving back to the communityAnd in the season of thankfulness and cheerful giving, the school selected a local charity to help support. After much consideration, the school chose the Pittsboro Salvation Army as it is also a Christian organization serving the local community.

Due to increased economic strains, this year’s program has reached a very high number of applications from families seeking assistance this Christmas. Of the 660 applications received thus far, an estimated 1,500 children are facing a lack of basic needs here in Chatham County.

For more information regarding the Salvation Army, please call 542-1593 or log onto www.salvationarmy.com. Families interested in Haw River Christian Academy may schedule a tour (533-4139) or visit the school’s website, www.HawRiverChristian.org, for more information. Enrollment for the 2010-11 school year begins in January 2010.
