Understanding Admissions

Haw River Christian Academy has an admissions policy that resembles the application process used in many other private schools and colleges. This enables the school to accurately identify and admit students from families who have clearly expressed convictions similar to the school’s philosophy and academic standards regarding the education of children.

The selection and make-up of the school’s student body is second only to staff in the impact it has upon the school’s mission. The family-like atmosphere that HRCA seeks to foster and currently enjoys is due in great measure to the similarity of biblical convictions and principles taught and lived out in the homes of our students. As the Lord blesses us with growth and change, we want to do all that we can to cultivate and maintain this culture.

HRCA is, in essence, an expression of the commitment of a body of parents to provide the best possible training and instruction for their children. Our mission is to instill in each student a love for truth, wisdom, discernment and learning through the use of excellent materials, in an orderly setting, founded on a growing personal knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. As a covenantal school, we require that at least one parent or guardian of each applicant give a credible profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and be a regular attendee or member of a Christian church.

Non-Discriminatory Policy:

HRCA follows a biblical philosophy of non-discrimination for both admissions of students and hiring of staff.  HRCA does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, or national origin in the administration of its policies, hiring, admissions, scholarships, and all other school-directed programs.

We encourage every family to research classical, Christian education, visit our school, and prayerfully seek God’s will  and provision for their children’s education.

DEFINITIONS

Refer to the Admissions Documents page for an outline of requirements and the resources needed when ready to apply. The following information provides definition for each of these requirements.

Corporation membership and annual fee  HRCA is a covenantal school. Corporation membership requires at least one parent/guardian to be a professing Christian, as outlined by the Statement of Faith. Corporation membership is a prerequisite for enrollment in the school.

Organization and Parent-Student handbooks  It is imperative that parents/guardians read and scrutinize the foundational beliefs of HRCA as they seek enrollment for their child(ren).

Pastor’s Reference form, indicating a family’s commitment to a church body  This form must be completed by the family’s pastor.

Signed Parental Contract  Parents/Guardians must be willing to cooperate with all written policies of HRCA. This is important in the areas of tuition and fees, discipline, uniform code, schoolwork standards, and communication with respect to teachers and staff.

Student Evaluation (JK only), academic screening (K-12) & student visit (grades 3-12)  Every new student is evaluated to determine academic and behavioral readiness for HRCA. The testing can take 30 minutes to 1 hour depending upon the grade level. The screening helps our principals assess the likely success of a student for the applying grade and determines the grade placement of an accepted applicant. Any recommendations or requirements for preparatory work before entering or during the school year will be conveyed to the family.

To provide a good understanding of the classroom and culture of the school, student visits are scheduled for students in grades 3-11 and are required for any students applying to 7th and above. These may be made in conjunction with the assessment day.

Family interview  Parents/Guardians are interviewed by the administration. Older students (grades 5-12) are expected to attend. The interview assists to evaluate the applicant’s readiness for HRCA, and a family’s overall fit, based upon our mission, educational philosophy, and culture. Families must be prepared to discuss:

  • A family’s faith and how it aligns with HRCA’s Statement of Faith.
  • The family’s educational philosophy.
  • The family’s understanding of classical Christian education, HRCA, and the Association of Classical Christian Schools.
  • “Loco parentis” – A family’s support, discipline, and talents.

Acceptance and admittance  The administration reviews all components of a family’s fit for admissions – student application, pastor’s reference, campus tour, student visit, school records, recommendations, academic screening, and family interview. Correspondence regarding acceptance is done no later than March 31. Applications received thereafter will be handled within an expedited time frame, based upon availability

Registration  To secure a family’s commitment for enrollment, a registration fee is due within 15 days of the acceptance. Notification of acceptance is sent via mail and electronically through the family’s school account.

RE-ENROLLMENT:

Re-enrollment for current students occurs for one week every January and is secured with a non-refundable fee. Currently enrolled students are only guaranteed a seat in the classroom during this time. If a family chooses to withdraw an enrollment commitment after this time, they forfeit their fee and seats for the next school year.
