A Tradition of Belonging, Mentorship, and Community
As students grow, they need more than academics.
They need friendship, guidance, accountability, and a place where they truly belong.
At Haw River Christian Academy, the House System is a meaningful part of student life, providing connection, mentorship, and a joyful culture of service and healthy competition for our upper school students.
What Is a House System?
The House System is historically rooted in academic institutions, where students were shaped not only through study, but through discipleship, community, and shared life.
In today’s schools, a “house” refers to a smaller community within the student body, where students build relationships across grade levels and grow together over time.
Haw River Christian Academy launched its House System in 2014 as a way to strengthen spiritual and social connectedness as students mature.
Why Houses Matter at Haw River
As a growing school, Haw River desired to create rhythms and traditions that would help students remain deeply connected as they move through the upper grades.
The House System exists to provide:
- Stronger friendships and belonging
- Opportunities for mentorship and leadership
- A culture of encouragement and accountability
- Shared experiences that shape student life
It is one of the ways we help students feel known, supported, and invested in their community.
Our Mission
The Houses of Haw River Christian Academy exist to be a visible, enjoyable,
and thriving extension of the school’s mission and vision.
They are designed to strengthen the culture of Christ-centered formation beyond
the classroom.
What Defines the House System
The House System at Haw River is built on several guiding principles:
Mentorship
House leaders may include faculty members or parents who invest in students with wisdom and care.
Socially Robust Community
Houses create meaningful opportunities for friendship, interaction, and school-wide unity.
Healthy Competition with Respect
Students enjoy competition while demonstrating love, humility, and respect toward one another.
Genuine Diversity Across Ages and Gifts
Each house includes a balance of grade levels, strengths, and personalities, creating a rich community experience.
Student Ownership and Culture
The House System is meant to complement the school’s culture, giving students a space for tradition, leadership, and belonging.
Who Participates?
The House System comprises upper school students.
Students are inducted into a house and remain active members until graduation. Siblings are assigned to the same house as their first inducted sibling.
As the program continues to grow, house membership includes:
- Junior members
- Senior members
- Alumni who are invited back for future house events and reunions
Life Within the Houses
Throughout the year, houses participate in experiences that strengthen community and character, including:
- Academic and athletic exhibitions
- Service projects
- School traditions and celebrations
- Social events such as fall and spring dances
- Opportunities for leadership and mentorship
Through these shared rhythms, students grow in maturity,
responsibility, and joy.
For Our House and the Glory of God
Each year, houses compete for the House Cup under the motto:
“Pro Domo Nostra et Gloria Dei”
(“For Our House and the Glory of God”)
Points are earned through predetermined events, service, and participation, and the house with the most points carries the cup title until the next award season.
The purpose is not simply to win, but to build unity, excellence,
and shared school spirit.
HRCA students can reason well, work hard, and communicate clearly. Students are taught by well-educated teachers who genuinely care for each student and their well-being.
Our children are thriving academically and enjoy going to school each day. It is our hope that residents of Chatham County take full advantage of the opportunity that HRCA presents to their families!
We could not be happier to have our children educated in a Classical Christian School. It has been one of the best decisions and investments we have made for our children.
One of the best decisions Christian parents can make is to enter into the covenant relationship that blesses and empowers their children with a classical Christian education.
We have watched our children grow into mature, well spoken, respectful and well rounded individuals who love the Lord. Our children are thriving at HRCA through the love, support and genuine desires from the staff.
The high academic standard is paired with a joyful, loving, Christ-centered environment where the word of God is taught and honored. It has been one of our greatest blessings to be part of this school!
