A Season of Foundations, Wonder, and Growth
The Grammar School years are a beautiful season of learning.
Children are naturally curious, eager to understand the world, and ready to build the habits that will shape their future.
At Haw River Christian Academy, our Grammar School (grades 1–6) provides a Christ-centered, classical education where students grow in knowledge, character, and joyful discipline.
The Years That Shape a Love of Learning
In Grammar School, students are laying the foundation for everything
that comes next.
This is a time when children delight in learning, absorb knowledge quickly, and begin forming patterns of attention, responsibility, and perseverance.
Our goal is to guide students with warmth and clarity as they grow into confident learners who love what is true and good.
Strong Building Blocks for Lifelong Learning
A classical education begins with a rich foundation.
In Grammar School, students develop essential skills in:
- Reading and writing with strength
- Phonics, grammar, and language fluency
- Mathematics and logical thinking
- History, literature, and the great stories of the past
- Science and wonder at God’s creation
Students go deep into meaningful subjects rather than rushing through many topics, allowing mastery and wisdom to develop
over time.
Learning Habits That Last
These years are not only about academics.
They are about shaping the habits that help students thrive.
In Grammar School, students learn:
- How to listen well
- How to work with diligence
- How to pursue excellence with joy
- How to respect teachers and classmates
- How to take responsibility as learners
Discipline is taught with gentleness, and structure is given as a gift.
Yearly Events our Grammar School Students Enjoy Most
History Parade (JK–6th)
Students dress as historical figures from their era of study and bring history to life for family and grandparents, closing with a Taste of History meal from the period.
100th Day of School (K)
Kindergarteners celebrate the 100th day of school with hands-on number activities — and by dressing as 100-year-olds.
Exordiums (K–12th)
Students at every grade level deliver structured short presentations that build public speaking and rhetorical skills, and are a favorite highlight for parents.
Spelling Bee (2nd–6th)
Students compete in a school spelling bee that builds precision, vocabulary, and perseverance.
Science Fair (3rd–6th)
Students observe, question, and present findings about God’s creation in a community science fair open to parent judges and guests.
Williamsburg (5th)
Fifth graders visit Colonial Williamsburg to experience the convictions and challenges of early America as living history, not distant dates.
Wilmington (6th)
Sixth graders explore the history, geography, and coastal heritage of Wilmington to connect classroom learning to God’s providence in their own region.
Christ at the Center of the Classroom
At Haw River, faith is woven naturally into every subject and every day. Students study Scripture as one unified story from Genesis to Revelation, revisiting it throughout their years at Haw River.
Students are reminded that all truth belongs to God, and learning is an act of worship.
Through Scripture, prayer, and biblical worldview teaching, children grow in:
- Knowledge of God’s Word
- Love for what is good
- Humility and kindness toward others
- Confidence rooted in Christ
Formation of the heart matters as much as formation of the mind.

- A Christ-centered understanding of the world
From here, students are ready to enter the Logic School years with confidence.
The high academic standard is paired with a joyful, loving, Christ-centered environment where the word of God is taught and honored. It has been one of our greatest blessings to be part of this school!
Our children are thriving academically and enjoy going to school each day. It is our hope that residents of Chatham County take full advantage of the opportunity that HRCA presents to their families!
We could not be happier to have our children educated in a Classical Christian School. It has been one of the best decisions and investments we have made for our children.
We have watched our children grow into mature, well spoken, respectful and well rounded individuals who love the Lord. Our children are thriving at HRCA through the love, support and genuine desires from the staff.
One of the best decisions Christian parents can make is to enter into the covenant relationship that blesses and empowers their children with a classical Christian education.
HRCA students can reason well, work hard, and communicate clearly. Students are taught by well-educated teachers who genuinely care for each student and their well-being.
